Safety & Alignment

Safety and alignment research asks whether models do what they're told, and only what they're told. For engineering teams the practical version is guardrails, permissions, and what an agent does when nobody is watching. It connects directly to the security research and the Complexity Paradox series.

Our analysis

23 October 2026 The scanner said it was checked, and the model stopped looking When static-analysis notes falsely claimed a safety check existed, LLM security auditors missed real vulnerabilities up to 19 points more often. False claims that a check was missing did no such harm. Safety & AlignmentAgents & Dev Tooling 16 October 2026 The repository wrote the permission you clicked to stop being asked Planted files in a repository got Claude Code and Codex CLI agents to propose an attacker-useful "don't ask again" rule in 58% of attempts, during a routine request to set the project up and run it. Safety & AlignmentAgents & Dev Tooling 13 October 2026 The task got done and nobody asked for the rest of it Asked to finish a single function, coding agents also installed packages, ran git commands and wrote test files nobody requested. On one popular harness, more than half of the runs that only had to execute or test a function left the environment changed. Agents & Dev ToolingSafety & Alignment 4 October 2026 Architecture beats vigilance The same plain vibe-coding prompts, passed through a supervisor, a coder and a security reviewer. Vulnerability density fell 77% against baseline, two classes of flaw disappeared entirely, and the nine-times complexity gap all but closed. Safety & AlignmentAgents & Dev Tooling 4 October 2026 The attacker fixed exactly what the reviewer asked for An attacker agent rewrote vulnerable pull requests using the AI reviewer's own rejection notes. One in five revisions won approval with a working exploit still live in the code. Safety & AlignmentAgents & Dev Tooling 2 October 2026 The detector that won the benchmark had already read it Fifteen prompt-injection detectors were measured on the tool outputs an agent actually screens, rather than on benchmark text. The one that tops the popular public benchmark caught 2% of the injections inside an agent. Safety & AlignmentModels & Releases

Key numbers

6.98% of audited Hugging Face model requests were blocked or rejected in H1 2026

Sonatype recorded 9,658 audited Hugging Face model requests in H1 2026 and found that 6.98% were blocked or rejected. The policy-telemetry sample is smaller and separate from its repository-adoption sample. A block reflects an organisation's policy decision and does not by itself establish that a model is vulnerable or malicious.

54% lack a defined way to limit AI-agent access or reuse human access rules

A Gartner survey of 297 cybersecurity leaders in Q2 2026 found that 54% of organisations either had no defined approach to restricting AI-agent access or relied on predefined human access. The combined response captures an access-control gap; it does not mean all of those organisations have no controls whatsoever.

131 AI-framework packages were poisoned by STARDUST CHOLLIMA in CrowdStrike’s investigations

CrowdStrike's 2026 Threat Hunting Report records 131 poisoned AI-framework packages associated with STARDUST CHOLLIMA. The report draws on Counter Adversary Operations intelligence from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026. This is a count from observed threat activity, not an estimate of the share of AI packages that are malicious.

56% average security pass rate across more than 100 code-generating models

Veracode's 2026 longitudinal report applied standardised code-generation tasks with no security-specific prompting across four testing snapshots. The average security pass rate was 56%, while the same models produced compilable code at a near-universal rate.

68% security pass rate for the best model in Veracode's Summer 2026 leaderboard

GPT-5.5 led Veracode's Summer 2026 secure-coding leaderboard at 68%. Six of the 11 models tested clustered between 50% and 53%, so even the leader failed almost one security task in three under the benchmark's unprompted conditions.

Veracode · 2026 GenAI Code Security Report → 28 Jul 2026 · Veracode Security Research

51% security pass rate for coding-specialised models — one point below general-purpose models

Models built specifically for coding averaged a 51% security pass rate in Veracode's raw-model tests, compared with 52% for general-purpose models. The test excluded agent tooling, guardrails and human review, isolating the models' default code-generation choices.
