Models & Releases

New models arrive every few weeks, and most launch posts lead with a benchmark score. The coverage here is about what changes for teams building software, such as price, context length, tool use, and whether a model is better at the work you give it or only better at the test. Benchmarks leak into training data and saturate, which is why the evaluation research on this site sits alongside the release news.

Our analysis

2 October 2026 The detector that won the benchmark had already read it Fifteen prompt-injection detectors were measured on the tool outputs an agent actually screens, rather than on benchmark text. The one that tops the popular public benchmark caught 2% of the injections inside an agent. Safety & AlignmentModels & Releases 24 August 2026 Every test passed because nothing had been migrated Coding agents were set loose on twenty real open-source codebases and told to rebuild each one on a different technology stack. Some handed the repository back barely changed, and the original test suite gave them full marks. Agents & Dev ToolingModels & Releases 18 August 2026 Rewrite the code, keep the meaning, and the leaderboard never notices Researchers rewrote real repositories into code that behaves identically, then set coding agents loose on both versions. Success rates barely moved. What the agents spent to get there did. Models & ReleasesAgents & Dev Tooling 5 August 2026 The plateau was in the benchmark, not the models A widely trusted test of AI coding ability had been marking correct answers wrong for years. Fix it, and the models that looked stuck turn out to be close to acing it. Models & ReleasesAgents & Dev Tooling

Key numbers

56% average security pass rate across more than 100 code-generating models

Veracode's 2026 longitudinal report applied standardised code-generation tasks with no security-specific prompting across four testing snapshots. The average security pass rate was 56%, while the same models produced compilable code at a near-universal rate.

Veracode · 2026 GenAI Code Security Report → 28 Jul 2026 · Veracode Security Research

68% security pass rate for the best model in Veracode's Summer 2026 leaderboard

GPT-5.5 led Veracode's Summer 2026 secure-coding leaderboard at 68%. Six of the 11 models tested clustered between 50% and 53%, so even the leader failed almost one security task in three under the benchmark's unprompted conditions.

Veracode · 2026 GenAI Code Security Report → 28 Jul 2026 · Veracode Security Research

51% security pass rate for coding-specialised models — one point below general-purpose models

Models built specifically for coding averaged a 51% security pass rate in Veracode's raw-model tests, compared with 52% for general-purpose models. The test excluded agent tooling, guardrails and human review, isolating the models' default code-generation choices.

Veracode · 2026 GenAI Code Security Report → 28 Jul 2026 · Veracode Security Research

56% vs 51% security pass rate for reasoning models compared with non-reasoning models

Reasoning models averaged 56% on Veracode's secure-code tasks, five points above non-reasoning models at 51%. It was the only architectural factor in the report associated with a consistent security advantage, though both groups still failed a large share of tasks.

Veracode · 2026 GenAI Code Security Report → 28 Jul 2026 · Veracode Security Research

53% / 51% / 51% security pass rates for large, medium and small models respectively

Veracode found little security difference by model size: systems above 100 billion parameters averaged 53%, while medium and small models each averaged 51%. Bigger models did not supply a meaningful secure-coding advantage under the same task conditions.

Veracode · 2026 GenAI Code Security Report → 28 Jul 2026 · Veracode Security Research

63% vs 30% security pass rates for AI-generated Python and Java code

Language choice produced a 33-point gap in Veracode's 2026 data. Python achieved the highest security pass rate at 63%; Java remained last at 30%, despite being the only language with a clear upward trend over the preceding year.
