Topic

Productivity & Labour

Does AI make engineering teams faster, and what happens to the people in them? So far the individual speed-ups look real, the gains at team and system level are harder to find, and the effect on junior roles gets less attention than it deserves. This theme collects the productivity studies alongside the jobs and hiring debate, and several of the opinion pieces started here.

Our analysis

20 July 2026 The Bottom Rung Is Missing AI is increasingly writing the routine, reviewable code that used to turn juniors into seniors. Headcount can rise while the apprenticeship quietly disappears. Productivity & LabourAgents & Dev Tooling 16 March 2026 Are AI projects really failing? Failure rates from 45% to 95% aren't contradictory; they're different yardsticks measuring different things. The real question is whether the way we judge AI's success was ever fit for purpose. Productivity & LabourFunding & Markets 20 October 2025 Your developers are 55% faster, so why aren't you shipping any faster? AI code assistants make individuals faster, but Theory of Constraints says speeding up a non-bottleneck doesn't speed up the system. What your engineers do with the extra capacity matters more than the assistant itself. Productivity & LabourAgents & Dev Tooling

Key numbers

9% of US CEOs describe AI agents as transformational for their organisation

KPMG's 2026 CEO Outlook covered more than 1,300 chief executives globally, including 400 in the United States. Only 9% of US respondents described agents as transformational, while 39% reported significant efficiency or growth improvements. These are executive assessments of organisational impact.

28% of CI/CD survey respondents access their tool through MCP or agent skills

JetBrains' 2026 CI/CD Tools Adoption Survey covered 598 respondents, including 576 using at least one CI/CD tool. Its combined MCP-or-agent-skills measure reached 28%. The measure combines overlapping responses to two interface options; adding their separate percentages would overcount people who selected both.

6% of CFOs say finance has AI embedded consistently in workflows and decisions at scale

IBM's survey of 1,500 CFOs and equivalent finance leaders across 33 geographies and 26 industries ran from February to April 2026. Only 6% placed finance in its transformation-ready stage, defined by consistent AI integration into workflows and decision-making at scale. This is reported maturity within finance, not an enterprise-wide deployment rate.

28% of Singapore commerce organisations surveyed currently use agentic AI

Salesforce's fourth State of Commerce report surveyed 3,450 commerce professionals across 20 countries in April–June 2026, including 100 in Singapore. The Singapore release reports 28% current agentic-AI adoption. This is a small country subsample of the global survey and should not be presented as a worldwide adoption rate.

80% of CHROs say AI adoption creates invisible work for employees

IBM and Oxford Economics surveyed 1,500 CHROs and 8,800 employees in April–June 2026. Eight in ten CHROs said adoption creates extra work such as checking recommendations, correcting errors and supplying context. The result records leaders' perceptions of work that can be missed by simple time-saving measures.

28% of surveyed public-sector organisations report successfully scaling AI initiatives

Capgemini's September 2026 government report draws on a global survey covering 600 public-sector organisations and interviews with government leaders. Only 28% reported scaling AI successfully. The result measures reported organisational progress, rather than the percentage of individual government services already automated.
